Kimberly McCrae Is Redefining Freedom

Posted on 01 September 2010 by Nicole

Kimberly McCrae is an Activist who is redefining freedom in a way that she feels will benefit all who seek true freedom – mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. She is spreading her word through the writing of Poetry and in the form of Spoken Word.

Many people see freedom as having the ability to do as you please without answering to someone. Or being able to live their lives as they want to and where they want to. Both of those definitions are only part of what true freedom really is. As we all know, there are many definitions of what we call “freedom.” True freedom to me is when you can use your mind, body and spirit to invoke change. Whether the change is positive or negative, we all possess the freedom to use our minds, our voices, and our connections to change the course of what goes on in our lives and the lives around us.

Kimberly “Redefining Freedom” McCrae is a educated woman and mother that believes in my ideal, as well.  She takes the liberty in her everyday life to use her voice to enlighten others in a positive way. In doing so, she hopes to bring about change in others. In hopes of keeping a positive change that will help human beings remain free in their minds and continue to spread this freedom throughout the generations.t

What exactly do you do…How did you get started?

I am an activist who uses poetry as one of the vehicles by which my message is spread.  I began writing while I was a child.  It has always been important to me to speak out against things that are wrong, to uplift the things that are right, and to live the things that we speak.  I hold myself accountable for living the things that I speak when I perform my poetry.  That is that greatest witness that some people will ever see…a life that is in line with the words that are being spoken.

When did you know you wanted to become a Spoken Word artist?

I still don’t know that I would call myself a Spoken Word artist.  I heard Sunni Patterson and the messages that she delivers through her art.  That sister inspires me and I appreciate her boldness in speaking out for what she believes to be absolutely true.  That is the path that I choose to take in my artistry.  I don’t want to waste my voice speaking about things that are inconsequential.  My activism is the primary motivation for my speaking out.  I desire for my voice to be heard on behalf of those who cannot and will not speak.  If I can be considered a Spoken Word artist while achieving this then I am okay with that.

What/Who inspired you to become an artist…your influences?

Sunni Patterson, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou, Miriam Makeba, Ysaye Barnwell, Sweet Honey in the Rock…there are many more influences who have played a part in inspiring my artistry, but I choose to uplift my sisters and the voices that they have made audible to a world who would choose to have them remain silent.  I desire to contribute to a legacy that will not be silenced or ignored because of the gravity of the words that we speak and the lives that we live.

Describe what Spoken Word Poetry is to you?

To me, Spoken Word Poetry has the ability to be a prophetic voice of positive change offering hope and a new definition of love in a time when so many are searching for answers to age old questions.  It is always the responsibility of the poets to not only give voice to the problems, but we MUST give voice to the solutions as well.  I believe that, as the Bible says, faith cometh by hearing.  When we put audible words of truth into the atmosphere, we offer our spirits a hope of something more promising than what we have become accustomed to seeing/receiving.

Who’s doing what you are doing?

Anyone who truly believes that we are interconnected and is walking in their divine purpose is doing what I am doing…seeking to manifest heaven on earth.

Who is your target audience?

My target audience is the people who are aware enough to know that there is a need for positive change and are finding ways to be that positive change despite all odds.

As a Spoken Word artist, what makes you so different from the rest?

I tend to require a level of excellence from myself that surpasses that which I expect of anyone else.  We all encounter negative life experiences.  I attempt to acknowledge those moments from the perspective of the “teachable moment” rather than the “unforgivable offense”.

If you had one thing to teach the world, what message would that be?

Our perceptions are not always truth…truth is that we are all divine.

What projects are you working on…what are your future plans?

I’m working on some teaching projects at the moment.  I have one CD completed titled “Come Back to the Beginning” and I am working on another along with a children’s poetry book.  Most immediate, I have put together a project titled “Then Sings My Soul” which I hope to be premiering very soon!  I’ll be sure to post details on Facebook as projects are completed and as performance dates/lecture dates are scheduled.

Peace and blessings!!
